The 'Bargain' Dow Corning Sealant Quote That Cost Us Twice as Much: A Buyer's TCO Story

An office administrator at a Spanish pharma company shares how choosing the cheapest Dow Corning industrial sealant supplier led to delays, failed application, and a €10,000 lesson in total cost of ownership.

Background: The Cleanroom Job

I'm the office administrator for a mid-sized Spanish pharma company near Barcelona. Two hundred employees, three buildings, a production floor, and an analytical lab. This part is uncomfortable to admit. All my spreadsheets pointed to the Valencia importer. A €1,300 saving is real money, and I knew finance would be pleased. But something felt off.

Look, I'm not saying every budget supplier is bad. That would be lazy thinking. But I learned that a quote is a starting point, not a promise. Now, for every purchase over €500, I run a quick TCO checklist:

  1. Product cost—the quote itself.
  2. Documentation—can they provide complete, traceable paperwork without me chasing them? In pharma, this can block a project indefinitely.
  3. Stock and delivery—is the product physically available, or is it "coming from a warehouse"? Every week of delay costs crew time.
  4. Technical support—if the application goes wrong, who helps? A datasheet is not support.
  5. Failure risk—what's the actual cost of rework if this fails? Usually 3–5 times the material savings.

These days, when someone asks me whether insurance covers sealant failure, I smile and say: "It doesn't have to, if you do the job right the first time."

The cleanroom passed its certification audit with zero findings. The Dow Corning sealants are holding up perfectly. And Jordi? He stopped double-checking my supply requests, which is possibly the closest a facilities manager ever gets to saying "I trust you."
