The call at 2:17
Thursday, 2:17 p.m. March 2024. The phone rang, and the voice skipped hello. “We have a USDA audit on Saturday. I need the Dow Corning 111 valve lubricant and sealant on a truck by tomorrow morning. Can you do it?”
The word audit explained everything. This was a food and beverage plant near Port Charlotte, and the valve manifold on their filling line was chattering. The plant had been running all week with a temporary workaround, but the Saturday audit was a hard deadline. Normal lead time for Dow Corning 111 is three days. He was calling at 2:17 on Thursday. That left less than 36 hours.
It shouldn’t have been an emergency. This product is usually a scheduled replenishment item. But someone in maintenance had added it to a cart back in January, approved the internal request, and then never pressed submit. The spare parts drawer had a cheap white tube that looked like it came from a flea market. The tube in the valve room was empty.
I’m the guy who takes these calls. I coordinate emergency material supply for industrial customers in southwest Florida, and I’ve been doing it for eight years. Last quarter alone, we processed 47 rush orders with 95% on-time delivery. In my role, I’ve learned that the real question isn’t can we do it? It’s what’s this going to cost all-in?
The $8.50 trap
The maintenance manager already had a quote from an online reseller: $8.50 a tube. Our price was $11.20. Actually, $11.12 after we dropped the local delivery fee. For a 12-tube order, the difference was less than $33. He almost hung up right there.
I’ve been a Dow Corning lubricant distributor long enough to know where that decision ends. The $8.50 quote isn’t $8.50 once you add overnight freight, the hour your maintenance supervisor spends chasing a tracking number, and the 0.5% chance that the tube is counterfeit or past its date. The $11.12 quote includes same-day delivery from a licensed distributor and a batch code we can trace back to the manufacturer. On a food-grade application, traceability is a deal-breaker.
Dow Corning 111 isn’t exotic. It’s a silicone valve lubricant and sealant that handles pressure, water washdowns, and temperature swings better than standard grease. It’s specified by OEMs for valves in food and pharma lines. But the product is only as good as the person who supplied it. A counterfeit tube or an expired batch code makes the price irrelevant.
I went back and forth on how hard to push back. If I came across too salesy, he’d dismiss me. If I stayed silent, he’d order the cheap stuff and I’d get a call Sunday when it failed. I’ve been on both sides of that fence. The aggressive pitch doesn’t work. Neither does the silent treatment.
So I just asked him to do the math out loud. “The savings is $33,” I said. “What happens if that tube doesn’t hold the seal Saturday?” He paused. “About $12,000 an hour,” he said.
That’s the moment I stopped selling and started talking total cost. The $8.50 quote was cheap only if everything went perfectly. The $11.12 quote was cheap if one thing went wrong. What I mean is that total cost isn’t a spreadsheet exercise. It’s the invoice plus the risk plus the phone calls plus the gray hair.
The 36-hour turnaround
We verified stock, printed the manufacturer’s batch certificate, and got the product on our truck by 4:30. At 6:40 that evening, I handed him 12 tubes in Port Charlotte. Saturday morning, the audit passed. No leaks. No corrective actions. No rework.
I have mixed feelings about rush fees. Part of me still thinks they’re a penalty for someone else’s lack of planning. The other part knows what a real emergency order costs to pull off: people checking stock, printing certificates, rearranging routes, answering phones. The fee is the signal that you’re asking an entire chain to move faster.
That order was, on paper, a no-brainer. But it almost wasn’t.
What ceramic coatings have to do with it
While we were on the phone, he asked if we carried ceramic coatings. A contractor had suggested one for a seasoning hopper that kept cracking during cleaning. I told him to slow down. Ceramic coatings are impressive in the right place, but “ceramic” is not a food-contact claim. Search “SW Florida ceramic coatings” and you’ll find a dozen shops applying paint protection to trucks, boats, and patio furniture. That has nothing to do with industrial process equipment.
If you’re evaluating FDA compliant coatings, the first thing to ask isn’t “Is it FDA approved?” It’s “What’s the regulation, and where’s the documentation?” The FDA doesn’t run a simple “yes” list. A coating can be compliant if its formulation and intended use meet the applicable rules in 21 CFR—and if the manufacturer can show you that. A contractor waving a generic “ceramic” brochure isn’t showing you that.
Food-contact compliance isn’t an adjective you can paste onto a sales spec. It’s a set of conditions: what’s in the coating, how it cures, whether it touches dry food or liquid food, what chemicals it sees during cleaning. That’s why “FDA compliant coatings” is a search term I respect but also a phrase that makes me nervous. It makes people think there’s a checklist. There’s a regulation, and there’s proof.
Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov/business-guidance/advertising-marketing), a claim like “FDA compliant” has to be substantiated. If a supplier won’t share a 21 CFR reference or a manufacturer’s food-contact declaration, that’s a red flag. Actually, that’s a full stop.
Can you eat corn starch?
Here’s where the search engines get weird. A week after that audit, our site analytics showed someone reached us after searching “can you eat corn starch.” It sounds like a joke, but it’s a fair loose thread. Yes, you can eat corn starch—it’s a common food ingredient. It thickens sauces, baking fillings, and all kinds of processed food. But being edible doesn’t make a corn starch–based coating automatically food-contact compliant.
Food ingredients and food-contact substances are regulated separately. Corn starch in a recipe is one thing. A coating containing corn starch or any other substance and sitting on a food-contact surface is another thing entirely. If you’re asking “can you eat corn starch” because you’re trying to figure out whether a product is food-safe, you’re on the right track. Just remember that “edible” and “compliant for contact with food” are two different questions.
What I actually learned
It took me eight years—and more than 200 emergency calls—to understand that the real cost of a material shows up after the purchase order, not before.
The $8.50 tube was never the cheapest tube. The $11.12 tube was, because it kept the plant running, the audit green, and the weekend intact. Bottom line: if you calculate TCO on every vendor comparison, the decision gets a lot easier. If you don’t, you’re just rolling dice.
Now, when I’m triaging a rush order, I ask two questions. What’s the penalty if this fails? What’s the time cost of the cheap option? The lowest quote wins only if it survives both. Trust me on this one.
And yes, plain corn starch is edible. Just don’t eat the valve grease.
