AllGuard gets applied like paint. It's supplied in pails or drums — I've bought it in 5-gallon pails for small jobs and a 55-gallon drum for one large restoration. Crews use spray rigs, rollers, or brushes. Coverage is measured in square feet per gallon, and the operation looks like industrial painting: masking tape, ladders, overspray protection.
3145 gets dispensed as a bead from a cartridge. Much smaller packaging — tubes and cartridges. A worker runs the bead along a joint or seam, closes it up, and lets it cure. Coverage is measured in linear feet. Cure time is roughly 24 hours at room temperature depending on bead thickness and humidity.
Why does this matter when you're buying? Because crews figure out the mismatch in about ten minutes. A spray crew can't cover a wall with cartridges of adhesive. A bonding technician can't spread a drum of coating across a structural seam. The product format has to match the application method — that's the test that keeps you out of trouble.
Dimension 3 — Performance and Certification: Not the Same Game
Here's where buyers get misled by credentials.
3145 gets the attention because of the military spec. MIL-A-46146 certification matters for aerospace, defense, and high-reliability work. You can't swap in an uncertified product when the contract calls for a spec. Dow Corning's published datasheet for 3145 documents the mechanical properties and cure behavior; the current version is available from their site — verify before you spec anything.
AllGuard doesn't carry a military spec. But it's engineered for an arguably harsher test: years of UV exposure, freeze-thaw cycling, wind-driven rain, thermal expansion of the building underneath. It has to stay flexible and bonded for a decade or more. That's not a certification—it's a field expectation, and it's severe in its own way.
The conclusion that surprised me: one isn't fundamentally tougher than the other. They're optimized for different failure modes. 3145 fights bond failure and thermal stress at a joint. AllGuard fights weathering and delamination across a wide surface. Rank them on one scale and you're not comparing apples to oranges—you're comparing a wrench to a level.
Where Buyers Go Wrong — and the Counterintuitive Part
The obvious way to choose is by category: coating vs. sealant. Real jobs don't always line up that cleanly.
Waterproofing is the example that cost me money. "Sealant" sounds like the right tool for stopping water. In narrow joints it is — 3145 seals seams very well. But on a large exterior wall, 3145 is the wrong answer. You'd need hundreds of cartridges, days of labor, and uneven results. AllGuard does the actual waterproofing there. It's paint-like in application, but functionally it's the barrier that keeps water out.

- The priority is water resistance, UV durability, and elastomeric flexibility over a large area.
- The crew is setting up spray rigs or rollers, expecting a paint-like application.
- You're buying in volume — pails or drums — for a surface-coverage project.
Order Dow Corning 3145 RTV MIL-A-46146 adhesive sealant when:
- You're bonding parts or sealing a specific joint between them.
- The contract references MIL-A-46146 or another military/industrial standard.
- The crew needs a room-temperature-cure product dispensed from a cartridge as a precise bead.
- Your coverage is measured in inches or feet, not square footage.
And when neither product is right:
These are industrial construction materials. They are not surgical adhesives for medical procedures. They are not dental sealants — if you're wondering whether getting sealants hurts, that's a clinical question about a completely different product class with its own regulatory approvals. Surgical adhesives, dental materials, and industrial silicones don't substitute for one another. Verify the regulatory category you need before buying anything.
