That was the third time in 18 months that a substitution decision slipped through because we didn't have a formal substitution process. Now we don't accept a material change without a written application spec. It took one mistake too many.

Everything I'd read about material selection said the expensive silicone with the established brand is the safe default. In practice, I've seen more failures from unclear requirements than from bad chemistry. The material wasn't bad. The decision process was broken.

Saying “We Don't Do That” Is a Feature

When I started this job, I avoided telling a customer that our product was the wrong fit. I thought that was my role: sell more, defend the catalog. Four years later, I'm convinced the opposite is true.

A specialist who admits a boundary earns more trust than a generalist who promises everything. When an engineer asks for silicone and the real requirement is structural rigidity, I'll say: “This isn't our strength. You need an epoxy or a structural adhesive.” I've lost small orders doing this. I've also gained larger orders from teams who came back later because they trusted the person who didn't sell them the wrong thing.

  2. Request the SDS and the TDS before you commit. The SDS handles safety; the technical data sheet handles performance.
  3. Get lot traceability. For regulated work, the lot number matters as much as the product name.
