Market access in pharma is the journey a drug takes from regulatory approval to sitting on a pharmacy shelf—health technology assessments, payer negotiations, formulary placements, all of it. But there's a less-glamorous side that doesn't get discussed as often: the manufacturing facilities need to pass audits before products can reach the market. And those audits review facility materials, including coatings and adhesives used in production-adjacent spaces.
So I request the following from any supplier before committing to an order:
- Certificate of Analysis (COA) matching the batch number
- SDS in the current regulatory format
- Technical data sheet with chemical resistance data
- VOC compliance data for coatings, if applicable in your region
- Batch numbers and traceability records
A product with a great price but missing COA paperwork is not cheaper. It's a future audit finding. For our production-adjacent areas, a missing COA is a deal-breaker. Period.
Step 3: Choose materials based on documented performance, not brand assumptions
Dow Corning comes up a lot in our industry. I order Dow Corning personal care silicone materials for our production team, and I've specified Dow Corning elastomeric coatings for our washdown walls. The documentation is thorough, and the chemical resistance data makes it easy to confirm suitability for our sanitation chemicals.
But here's the thing: just because a silicone product performs well in one application doesn't mean it fits another. Silicones in personal care are formulated for skin compatibility, not scrub resistance. Elastomeric coatings are formulated for surface protection, not skin contact. They're worlds apart, and I've seen internal teams make that mistake—using production ingredients in facility maintenance because both have the same brand name on the label. Don't do that.
When selecting any brand, I check four things on the datasheet:
- Chemical resistance table—does it include the specific sanitizer we use?
- Scrub resistance per ASTM D2486 or similar
- Vapor permeability for masonry substrates
- Adhesion rating for the specific substrate via ASTM D4541
Step 4: Calculate coverage with a realistic margin
Datasheets list coverage based on smooth, non-porous surfaces at a specified dry film thickness. Real-world surfaces are rarely that cooperative.
My current rule is simple: add 10% margin for smooth interior surfaces and 20% for rough or previously painted surfaces. For porous block or spalled concrete, 30% isn't unreasonable.
