Dow Corning Vacuum Lubricant, Non-Sag Sealants, and Coating Sagging: A Procurement Checklist

I manage the maintenance materials budget at a 120-person industrial coating and assembly company. For the last six years, I have tracked every invoice, every tube of sealant, and every rework hour. That experience changed how I buy silicones. This checklist is the one I wish I had before spending roughly $180,000 on materials and related waste.

If you are about to order a Dow Corning vacuum lubricant, a non-sag lap sealant, or a silicone conformal coating, take the next 10 minutes and run through this checklist. It covers the application, the product spec, the distributor, and the application process. Seven steps total.

Step 1: Identify the failure mode, not just the product name

A Dow Corning vacuum lubricant is not the same as a non-sag sealant. Silicone is a chemistry family, not a single product. If the joint is vertical and the sealer drips, you need a non-sag or thixotropic sealant. If the surface is a vacuum fitting, you likely need a grease with low outgassing. If you are protecting a circuit board, you need a conformal coating with the right viscosity and cure schedule.

Coating sagging is the specific failure that shows up when a material is applied too thick or when viscosity drops. Sagging looks like a curtain or teardrop on a vertical surface. It is a flow control problem. The opposite of a sagging coating is a non-sag sealant like Dicor non-sag lap sealant for RV roofs. That product is thixotropic: it stays in place when static and flows when you apply shear.

Step 2: Look up what is open time for adhesives before you buy

Step 3: Write the purchase order with the TDS, not just the product family

'Dow Corning vacuum lubricant' is a good start. It is not enough. Include the full product code, the package size, the cure chemistry, the consistency, and the shelf-life requirement. Otherwise the receiving team may accept a substitute that looks similar but behaves differently.

I found this out the hard way. Looking back, I should have spent ten more minutes writing the spec. At the time, I was trying to move fast. The result: a $1,200 redo on a sealed assembly because the grease we received was a light spray lubricant, not the high-vacuum grease the technician needed.

A distributor that understands this will ask questions. If the rep only sends a quote, that is a red flag.

Step 4: Treat a Dow Corning silicone distributor as a partner, not a price feed

Here is the thing: the lowest quote is often the most expensive order. I compare total cost of ownership, not unit price. Does the quote include freight? Is there a $50 handling fee? A minimum order that forces you to buy 20 tubes when you only need 3? Does the warehouse store silicone near a roof leak? I have seen all three.

When searching online, try both 'dow-corning' and 'Dow Corning.' Some legacy spec sheets and distributor catalogs use the hyphenated form. It is the same product family, but the search results differ.

I switch vendors only after comparing 8 vendors over 3 months using a TCO spreadsheet. The best Dow Corning silicone distributor for us would stock the product line, provide lot traceability, and send the latest TDS with every order. That last point matters because formulations change. What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025.

Step 5: Check shelf life and date codes at receiving

Silicone sealants and coatings have a shelf life. Old material can mean longer tack-free time, less adhesion, or sagging. The date code is not decorative. I want to say we inspect every batch, but honestly we missed one shipment last year because the boxes looked new. The sealant inside was 14 months old. The result was a runny lap sealant that looked like a coating sagging failure.

Now every incoming order gets a shelf-life check before the forklift moves. If the date code is not clear, take a photo and email the distributor. If they hesitate, that tells you something.

Step 6: Set the application parameters to avoid coating sagging

A coating sagging defect is almost always avoidable. The usual cause is one thick coat applied to a vertical surface at the wrong temperature. Apply two thin coats instead. Wait the required open time between coats. Check the solvent flash-off. Confirm the air temperature and humidity match the TDS conditions.

Honestly, I'm not sure why some coatings sag on a perfectly clean surface. My best guess is the flash-off rate changed overnight because humidity went up, and the solvent stayed in the film longer. That is probably why we saw sagging on edges even though the surface was prepped correctly.

Also, a non-sag sealant is not immune. Non-sag means it resists gravity in thick applications up to a certain joint width. Go beyond that gap, and it can sag or slump. Check the TDS for the maximum joint width.

Step 7: Run a mock-up before the full batch

Test the exact joint geometry, substrate, and application method you expect in production. Use the same cleaning solvent, the same spray gun, the same ambient temperature. It takes less than an hour and catches most failures.

When a mock-up passes, there is a certain satisfaction in knowing you avoided expensive rework. That is the best part of a checklist: it turns procurement and application from guesswork into a repeatable process.

What I would skip, or never skip again

First, treat the open time as a real limit, not a suggestion. 'What is open time for adhesives?' is a question your team should be able to answer from the TDS. If they cannot, pause before approving the PO.

Second, do not assume every non-sag lap sealant is interchangeable. Dicor non-sag lap sealant has a specific formulation for RV roofing. An industrial Dow Corning non-sag sealant is not necessarily a replacement; it depends on the substrate, temperature range, and UV requirements. Read the technical data, not the label color.

Third, avoid gray market listings. A website claiming to be a Dow Corning silicone distributor might not be authorized. Check the official distributor locator or ask the manufacturer's customer service for a regional rep. If the price is suspiciously low, assume the product, storage, or traceability is suspicious too.

Finally, the industry is changing. The fundamentals have not changed: correct product, correct application, correct storage. But execution has transformed—more data, better formulations, tougher environmental requirements. A 2020 purchasing practice can be a 2025 hidden cost.
