The general supply house? They said they'd "call the wholesaler" when I asked for batch traceability. The response took four days and was a photocopy with handwritten initials. It didn't prove anything.

For standard orders, you plan ahead. For emergencies, it's slower.

But for non-stock items, the general supplier's speed turned out to be an illusion. They quoted "2 days" on a Dow Corning heat-transfer compound. Their wholesaler was actually out of stock, and it took 11 days. Our production line stalled. The authorized distributor quoted 5 days for the same product and delivered on day 5.

Verdict: general supplier wins on routine speed. Authorized distributor wins on commitment accuracy. A realistic 5-day promise I can plan around beats an optimistic 2-day guess that actually takes 11.

A Sidebar: Sodium Hydroxide, Where This Comparison Falls Apart

Everything above applies to Dow Corning silicone products. It does not apply to the rest of your chemical inventory.

Take sodium hydroxide. We buy caustic soda from a dedicated chemical supplier. Sodium hydroxide supplier evaluation is a completely different discipline: SDS accuracy, hazmat handling procedures, tanker logistics, concentration verification, emergency response plans. The framework I use for silicone sealants—documentation, tech support, delivery accuracy—doesn't translate. Different chemical families, different regulatory risks, different vendor qualification requirements.

So if you're sourcing sodium hydroxide, evaluate suppliers on chemical safety compliance, not on tech-support warmth. This framework is specific to Dow Corning product sourcing.

Which One Should You Choose?

After five years and roughly 300 orders, I've stopped asking "which supplier is better?" and started asking "what exactly am I ordering?"

Choose the authorized Dow Corning product supplier (or lubricant distributor specifically) when:

  • Materials are spec'd by brand and part number in your PM schedules or OEM warranties.
  • You need batch traceability with clean documentation.
  • You want technical guidance on product selection or application.
  • Your QA or finance team will audit purchase records.

Choose the general industrial supplier when:

  • You need commodity-grade material fast, and substitution is acceptable.
  • Your team already knows exactly what they're using and why.
  • It's not a compliance-sensitive application.

I recommend the authorized distributor for roughly 80% of our Dow Corning purchases. The other 20%—the "just get me some sealant" orders—goes to the general house. No vendor is universally best. For documented specialty materials, the authorized channel earns its premium. For generic fill-ins, it's overkill.
